Happiness Escapes Me

Happiness escapes me
And leaves me so
Lost and alone
With none to know

I picture myself
Inside a cell
Dejected and worn
With only a tale

Before my eyes
I see the key
But hope is only
A memory

So I sit
And wonder why
I’ve given up
No will to try

Who placed me here
Within this jail
Or am I the reason
That I fail?
